The JMS Custom Designs Customer Journey: What to Expect When Investing in a Bespoke Kitchen

Investing in a bespoke kitchen is a big decision. For many homeowners, it is one of the largest and most personal projects they will take on in their home. It is not something most people do often, and because of that, the process can feel overwhelming at the beginning.

At JMS Custom Designs, we understand that. Many of our clients are starting from scratch and simply want to know what happens next, what is expected of them, how long it all takes, and how the payment process works.

This guide walks you through the full customer journey with JMS Custom Designs, from your first enquiry right through to installation day, so you know exactly what to expect.

Why Choose a Bespoke Kitchen?

Before getting into the process, it is important to understand what makes a bespoke kitchen different.

A bespoke kitchen is designed and built specifically for your home, your space, and your lifestyle. It is not an off-the-shelf product, and it is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Every detail is considered carefully, from storage and functionality to finishes, layout, and overall style.

For many of our clients, the biggest advantage of going bespoke is that they get something truly tailored to their home rather than trying to make their home fit around a standard kitchen.

Whether you are renovating, extending, building a new home, or simply upgrading your existing kitchen, the process should feel exciting, clear, and well managed.

Step 1: Initial Enquiry

The journey starts with your first enquiry.

This is where you get in touch with JMS Custom Designs to tell us a little about your project. At this stage, you do not need to have every detail figured out. Some clients come to us with a full Pinterest board, floorplans, and a clear vision. Others simply know that they want a better kitchen and need help bringing the idea to life.

When making your first enquiry, it helps to include:

  • your location
  • whether the project is a renovation, extension, or new build
  • any drawings or measurements you already have
  • your ideal timeline
  • photos of the current space
  • any inspiration images or style references

This first point of contact helps us understand the scope of the project and whether we are the right fit for what you are looking for.

You can fill out our project enquiry from here.

Step 2: Initial Discussion and Project Review

Once your enquiry is received, the next step is an initial conversation about your project.

This is where we begin to learn more about your home, your needs, your style, and your priorities. For example, some clients want maximum storage. Others care most about creating a luxury entertaining space. Some want a timeless shaker kitchen, while others are looking for a more modern or minimalist finish.

This stage is all about understanding how you live and what you need your kitchen to do for you.

We will typically discuss:

  • the style you are drawn to
  • your layout options
  • your storage requirements
  • your appliances
  • any must-have features such as islands, breakfast stations, larders, or hidden utility storage
  • your ideal timeframe
  • your expected budget range

This conversation is important because a great kitchen is not just about how it looks. It is about how it functions for your day-to-day life.

Step 3: Securing Your Booking Slot

If you would like to move forward, a 10% booking deposit is required to secure your place in the manufacturing timeline.

This booking deposit is what confirms your slot with JMS Custom Designs. Because every kitchen is made to order and each project is carefully scheduled, securing your place early is important, especially during busy periods.

At this point, your project moves from an enquiry to an active booking in our system.

This gives both you and us clarity on the timeline and allows the design and planning process to begin properly.

Step 4: Design Development and Planning

Once your booking is secured, the design phase begins.

This is one of the most exciting parts of the process because this is where your ideas start to take shape. During this phase, we work through the details of your kitchen layout, cabinetry, finishes, style, and practical needs.

This stage may involve reviewing plans, refining dimensions, discussing materials, and making decisions on the overall look and feel of the space.

Key considerations during the design phase often include:

  • cabinet configuration
  • internal storage solutions
  • island sizing and layout
  • integration of appliances
  • feature elements such as pantry units, coffee stations, dressers, or media walls
  • colour choices
  • handles or handleless options
  • worktop coordination
  • lighting considerations
  • how the kitchen connects with the rest of the home

This stage is not rushed. The goal is to create a kitchen that feels considered, balanced, and built around your lifestyle.

Step 5: Finalising the Project Before Production

Once the design is agreed and the finer details are confirmed, the project moves closer to production.

At this point, the kitchen design is largely locked in and everything needed for manufacturing is being prepared. This is an important point in the journey because accuracy and communication are key.

A 50% payment is required to order materials, and this is also required a minimum of 10 weeks before your desired fitting date.

This payment allows materials to be ordered and ensures your kitchen can move forward on schedule.

Because bespoke kitchens are made specifically for each client, materials, finishes, and production time all need to be carefully coordinated in advance.

Step 6: Materials Ordered

Once the 50% payment has been received, materials are ordered.

This is a major milestone in the process. It means your kitchen is officially entering the production pipeline.

At JMS Custom Designs, we do not work from mass-produced stock units. Materials are being sourced for your specific project, based on the agreed design and finish selections. This stage ensures that everything needed for your build is ready for manufacturing.

Typical elements coordinated at this stage may include:

  • cabinet materials
  • doors and panels
  • paint finishes
  • hardware
  • specialist components
  • any custom joinery details

This stage is where planning starts to become something tangible.

Step 7: Manufacturing Begins

Around 2 to 3 weeks after materials are ordered, manufacturing begins.

This is where the craftsmanship comes to life.

Your kitchen is built in the workshop with attention to detail, precision, and quality at every stage. Depending on the complexity of the project, manufacturing typically takes approximately 6 to 8 weeks.

This part of the journey is where bespoke really shows its value. Each element is being made specifically for your home, rather than pulled from standard stock dimensions.

The manufacturing stage may include:

  • cutting and preparing materials
  • cabinet construction
  • assembly
  • spraying or finishing
  • detailing and quality checks
  • preparation for installation

Because every kitchen is different, timelines can vary slightly depending on scale, finish, and custom features, but clients are guided clearly throughout the process.

Step 8: Workshop Viewing

Before installation, a 20% payment is required on the day of viewing the kitchen in the workshop.

This is a really exciting stage for clients because it is often the first time they get to see their kitchen taking shape in a real, physical form.

The workshop viewing gives you an opportunity to see the craftsmanship, appreciate the detail, and feel confident in the progress of your project before installation begins.

It is also a valuable moment in the process because it helps connect all the earlier planning and design decisions to the final product you are about to receive in your home.

Step 9: Installation

Once manufacturing is complete, your kitchen is installed.

Installation is where everything comes together. After weeks of planning, design, ordering, and manufacturing, the vision becomes a finished space in your home.

The installation process is carefully scheduled, and the final details are brought together with the same level of care that has gone into every earlier stage.

A final 20% payment is required on the day of installation.

At this point, your bespoke kitchen is becoming fully realised in the space it was designed for.

Step 10: Add-Ons and Final Adjustments

During some projects, clients decide to add extra details or upgrade certain elements as the process progresses. This is not unusual, especially once a client sees the design evolving and begins to think about additional features that could enhance the finished result.

Any approved add-ons during the process are added to the final 20% payment.

This ensures transparency and keeps everything clear and straightforward.

Examples of add-ons might include:

  • extra storage features
  • upgraded internal accessories
  • additional cabinetry
  • matching utility units
  • bespoke furniture pieces coordinated with the kitchen

Understanding the Payment Terms

For clarity, the JMS Custom Designs payment structure is as follows:

  • 10% booking deposit to secure your booking
  • 50% payment required to order materials
  • 20% payment required on the day of viewing the kitchen in the workshop
  • final 20% payment required on the day of installation

Any agreed add-ons during the project are included in the final payment.

This staged payment structure helps ensure that the project moves smoothly through each phase, from scheduling and ordering through to manufacture and installation.

Typical Timeline at a Glance

Although every project is different, the general process looks like this:

  • booking deposit secures your slot
  • 50% payment is made at least 10 weeks before your desired fitting date
  • materials are ordered
  • around 2 to 3 weeks later, manufacturing begins
  • manufacturing takes approximately 6 to 8 weeks
  • workshop viewing takes place
  • installation follows

This means it is always best to plan ahead, particularly if you have a preferred fitting date in mind.

Why Clients Appreciate a Clear Process

One of the biggest concerns people have when investing in a bespoke kitchen is not knowing what to expect. When the process feels unclear, it can make the whole experience more stressful than it needs to be.

That is why having a structured and transparent customer journey matters.

At JMS Custom Designs, the aim is not just to deliver a beautiful finished kitchen. It is to make sure clients feel informed, looked after, and confident from the first enquiry through to the final installation.

A bespoke kitchen is a significant investment, and the experience should reflect that.
